CARTERVILLE, Ill. — Residents in parts of this city found the tap running dry for a stretch this summer, after water service was shut down in sections of Carterville, KFVS12 reported.
Details on the cause and duration were sparse, but the outage is the kind of inconvenience that lands hardest on the households who can least absorb it — a missed load of laundry, a canceled shower before a shift, a scramble for bottled water on a July afternoon. Carterville, home to John A. Logan College and one of the county's steadier growth stories, has otherwise built a reputation as the reliable suburb of the coalfield towns. A water shutdown, even a brief one, is a reminder that infrastructure here is aging right along with everything else built during the boom years.
