CARTERVILLE, Ill. — The tasting room goes quiet this week. Walker's Bluff announced its Winery and Legends venue is closing permanently on Wednesday, according to the Southern Illinoisan, ending nearly two decades as one of Southern Illinois's hospitality destinations.
Management pointed to one culprit: rising property taxes. It's the same complaint you hear across this county from small business owners who watched their assessments climb faster than their revenue, but Walker's Bluff was no corner tavern — it was a destination that drew wine tourists and concertgoers to Carterville for nearly twenty years.
The closure was confirmed by multiple outlets, including KFVS12 and WPSD Local 6, both citing the tax burden as the deciding factor.
The shutdown strips away another piece of the entertainment corridor this county has leaned on since the coal jobs left. For the vineyard workers, servers and musicians who booked Legends stages, Wednesday marks the end of a paycheck — and one more reminder that in Williamson County, the tax bill can close a business as surely as a bad season.
