“But he knoweth the way that I take: when he hath tried me, I shall come forth as gold.”
— Job 23:10 (King James Version)
It is the third week of something that isn't working. The job search that keeps ending in polite rejections. The recovery that inches forward, then slides back. The marriage you're trying to mend one careful conversation at a time. You did everything right, and still the door stays shut. On mornings like that, Job's words don't sound like defeat — they sound like a man refusing to let go of hope in the dark.
Notice what he clings to: not an explanation, but a Presence. He knoweth the way that I take. Job cannot see the road ahead, but he trusts that he is seen on it. That is a quieter, sturdier kind of faith than the sort that only sings when the sun is out.
John Chrysostom, the golden-tongued preacher of fourth-century Antioch who himself was exiled and worn down by hardship, taught that trials are not proof of God's absence but the very furnace in which character is refined. The fire, he insisted, is not the enemy of the gold — it is what reveals it. Centuries later, Teresa of Ávila, the Spanish reformer who spent years in spiritual dryness before her deepest joy, urged her sisters that patience obtains all things; the soul that waits without quitting is already winning. And Charles Spurgeon, the great London preacher who battled his own long seasons of depression, liked to remind his congregation that the same trial that would sink an unbeliever only teaches the faithful to swim.
Here is the encouragement to carry into today: the heat you're feeling is not a sign that you've been forgotten. It is the process, not the punishment. Gold does not emerge in an afternoon, and neither do you. Your task is not to see the whole way — it is to take the next honest step and trust that you are known on it.
So make the next call. Show up to the appointment. Say the kind, hard thing. You are not being consumed. You are being clarified. And the version of you that comes forth from this — steadier, deeper, more genuinely yourself — will be worth the waiting.
A Prayer for Today
Gracious God, when the way ahead is hidden from me, remind me that I am never hidden from You. Give me the patience to endure what I cannot yet understand, and the courage to take the next small step in trust. Refine what needs refining in me, and bring me through it stronger and more truly myself. Amen.
