“Nevertheless I am continually with thee: thou hast holden me by my right hand. Thou shalt guide me with thy counsel, and afterward receive me to glory.”
— Psalm 73:23-24 (King James Version)
There is a particular kind of Tuesday when nothing has gone wrong, exactly, but nothing feels certain either. Maybe it's the job offer you can't decide on, the diagnosis still waiting on a callback, or just the quiet 6 a.m. moment when you scroll through other people's tidy, filtered lives and wonder why your own path looks so unmarked. You want a map. What you get is a Tuesday.
The man who wrote Psalm 73 knew that feeling in a sharper form. Asaph was a worship leader in ancient Israel, and this psalm is his confession that he'd nearly lost his footing — he'd watched the arrogant and dishonest prosper while he did everything right and struggled anyway. "My feet were almost gone," he admits earlier in the psalm. He envied the wicked until, he says, he came into the sanctuary of God — and there his perspective turned. That's the hinge on which today's verse swings: nevertheless. Despite the doubt, despite the unanswered questions, he was still held.
Notice he doesn't say God removed the uncertainty. He says God took his hand. St. Augustine, the fourth-century bishop of Hippo who spent years chasing meaning in the wrong places before his conversion, wrote in his Confessions that "our heart is restless until it rest in Thee." He understood that guidance isn't usually a floodlight thrown ahead of us — it's a steady hand at our side, present in the restlessness itself, not just at the end of it.
Charles Spurgeon, the great nineteenth-century London preacher, loved this psalm precisely because it doesn't pretend faith erases confusion. He saw in it the honest record of a believer who wrestled hard and was still led home. That's an encouragement worth carrying into whatever today holds: you don't need the whole itinerary. You need the hand that's already holding yours, one ordinary decision at a time, guiding you not around the hard stretch but through it — and somewhere beyond it, toward something good.
You are not required to see the whole road today. Just take the next step, hand in hand.
A Prayer for Today
Lord, when the way ahead is unclear, remind me that clarity was never the promise — Your presence was. Steady my footing where I feel unsure, and quiet the envy or fear that makes me doubt Your care. Guide me today, one small decision at a time, and let me trust the hand that holds mine even when I cannot see where it leads. Amen.
