A bladder stone weighing 3.1 kilograms — roughly the weight of a newborn — has been removed by doctors who say it is the largest on record, according to the BBC.
Bladder stones form when minerals in concentrated or stagnant urine crystallize, usually because the bladder isn't emptying fully. Most are small enough to pass or dissolve on their own, but left untreated over months or years, they can keep growing, layer by layer, into masses like this one.
The scale of this stone is what sets the case apart. For comparison, most bladder stones removed surgically weigh a few grams to a few dozen grams; anything over a kilogram is considered exceptional in the medical literature.
Here is what we don't yet have: the hospital, the surgical team's names, the patient's age or medical history, or confirmation of the "record" claim from an independent body such as Guinness World Records or a peer-reviewed case report. The BBC's own item says doctors "claim" the record — language that signals the claim hasn't been externally verified as of this writing. Extreme case reports like this one often surface first in local or wire media before appearing, if ever, in urology journals, where surgeons typically document a stone's composition, the procedure used, and the patient's recovery.
None of that undercuts the basic, striking fact: a stone this size sitting inside a human bladder is a serious medical event, not a curiosity. Large stones cause chronic pain and infection risk, and can damage the bladder and kidneys over time. What matters most for readers isn't the record itself but whether the patient recovered — and that depends on details not yet public.
