Should Robots Call Balls and Strikes?
As MLB moves toward a full rollout of automated ball-strike technology, fans and players are divided over whether precision is worth the cost to tradition.

Major League Baseball has spent the past several seasons testing an automated ball-strike system — nicknamed "robot umps" — in the minor leagues and spring training, with a limited challenge system already used in some exhibition and All-Star settings. The technology tracks pitches with radar and cameras and can either call every pitch itself or let players challenge a small number of calls per game. As MLB inches closer to a full rollout, the question of whether the strike zone should be adjudicated by machine or by human eye has become one of the sport's most animated arguments, drawing in traditionalists, technologists, players, and fans alike.
The case for automated strike zones
Proponents argue this is simply a matter of getting the call right. Pitch-tracking systems can determine, to the millimeter, whether a ball crossed the strike zone — something even the best human umpires get wrong dozens of times a game, according to studies of umpire accuracy using the same tracking data. In a sport where championships and careers can hinge on a single at-bat, advocates say there is no principled reason to prefer human error over machine precision when the technology to eliminate it already exists and is already being used for instant replay on other calls.
Supporters also point to consistency. A human strike zone can vary by umpire, by count, by score, even by how a catcher frames the pitch — creating a moving target that undermines the integrity of the competition. An automated zone would apply the same standard to every pitcher and hitter, every night, regardless of who's behind the plate. For a sport that already trusts computers to overturn calls on the bases and at home plate via replay review, extending that same logic to balls and strikes is, in this view, a natural and overdue step rather than a radical break with tradition.
Finally, backers note that the hybrid "challenge system" tested in the minors preserves human umpires as the default, only correcting them when a team formally disputes a call — meaning most of the game's texture and rhythm remains untouched while its most consequential errors get fixed.
The case against automated strike zones
Opponents argue that baseball's charm lies precisely in its human imperfection, and that a fully automated zone would strip something essential from the game. Umpires calling balls and strikes is not merely a mechanical function but part of a long, lived tradition — arguments at the plate, the manager's ejection, the pitcher who works an ump's tendencies, the rookie catcher learning to frame — all of which give the sport its idiosyncratic character. Baseball, this argument goes, has always tolerated asymmetry and quirk in ways other sports don't, and treating every close pitch as a solvable engineering problem risks turning a human drama into a sterile data exercise.
Critics also raise practical objections. The strike zone as defined in the rulebook is itself somewhat abstract — it adjusts to each hitter's individual stance and height — and skeptics question whether cameras can capture that nuance as reliably as advocates claim, particularly on borderline pitches at the edges of the zone. There are also concerns about pace of play and how challenges could add new stoppages, and worries that removing the human element from ball-strike calls is the first step toward automating other judgment calls that fans still want humans to make, from checked swings to hit-by-pitches.
Underlying much of the opposition is a broader cultural unease: a sense that technology is being inserted into more and more corners of daily life, often justified by the promise of accuracy, and that some human institutions — sports among them — are worth preserving precisely because they are imperfect, contestable, and alive with dispute.
The unresolved tension
Both sides agree that mistakes happen and that technology could reduce them — the disagreement is over whether reducing errors is worth the trade-off in tradition, texture, and human presence that many fans say they value as much as the final score. Supporters of automation see a straightforward correction of an obvious flaw; opponents see the slow erosion of what makes the sport recognizably itself. Whether baseball's future belongs to precision or to imperfection — and whether those two things must be in tension at all — remains an open question as MLB weighs a full leaguewide rollout.
