MARION — A Williamson County woman was taken into custody after the Williamson County Sheriff's Office investigated suspected online prostitution, the Southern Illinoisan reported.
The investigation resulted in drug charges being filed against the woman as well, according to the paper. Few other details of the case were made public.
Cases like this rarely make front-page news on their own, but they're a window into the quieter work the sheriff's office does away from the courthouse steps — the kind of investigation that starts online and ends in handcuffs. Williamson County has seen its share of vice cases over the decades, going back further than anyone at the sheriff's office today has worn a badge. What's different now is the venue: online, instead of on a street corner.
