Federal wildlife officials plan to dewater the lake as part of a safety overhaul

CRAB ORCHARD NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE — The dam at Little Grassy Lake has stood a long time, and now the federal government wants the public to weigh in before it touches the thing.
A public comment period has opened on a plan aimed at reducing safety risks at the Little Grassy Lake Dam, according to KFVS12. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, which manages the lake as part of Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge, has also announced plans to dewater Little Grassy Lake as part of the project, the agency said in its own posting.
A dewatering means lower water and changed access for however long the work takes — the kind of change that gets noticed by anyone who uses that lake. What isn't spelled out yet, at least in what's been made public, is the timeline or the exact scope of the safety fix.
Every time the federal government reaches into a piece of infrastructure like this, it's worth asking who gets a say. Right now, the public does, at least for a while. Residents who use Little Grassy should watch for details on the comment window before it closes.
