MARION — The lights went dark for good at O'Charley's on Wednesday night, after about 24 years serving up potato soup and Southern comfort food along Marion's retail corridor, according to the Southern Illinoisan.
The closure wasn't isolated. Multiple outlets, including KFVS12, reported the chain appears to be shuttering its remaining Heartland locations entirely, part of a broader wind-down that swept up the Marion restaurant along with it.
For two dozen years, the restaurant was a fixture for families heading out after church, for road-trippers off I-57, for the after-work crowd that didn't feel like cooking. Now it joins the growing list of empty storefronts along the strip — another building that'll need a new tenant, another set of jobs that went away without much warning.
No word yet on what, if anything, moves into the space. But in a county that's watched its coal tipples and its Main Street storefronts both go quiet over the decades, one more dark restaurant sign is a small loss that still stings for the people who worked there.
