Logan College Fires Up Inaugural Weld Wars, Then Digs Out to Reopen
A new competition and a return to normal, back to back

CARTERVILLE — John A. Logan College had a busy stretch, by two different measures.
The college held its inaugural Southern Illinois Weld Wars, a new competition drawing welders to the Carterville campus, WPSD Local 6 reported. The event adds to Logan's long record as a retraining ground for the region's tradespeople — a college that, going back to the years when the mines shed jobs by the thousand, has made its name teaching people to weld, wire, and machine their way into new work.
Separately, the college announced it would resume normal operations on Thursday after a disruption, with its men's basketball game postponed as a result, according to WSIL-TV. Neither report detailed the cause of the closure.
Between a new competition meant to draw students in and a schedule disruption that knocked one out, it was a week that showed both sides of running a community college: building something new while working around whatever gets in the way.
