Johnston City Firefighters Host Annual Chili Dinner Fundraiser

JOHNSTON CITY, Ill. — The Johnston City Fire Department is putting on its annual chili dinner fundraiser, WSIL-TV reports, the kind of small-town event that keeps a volunteer-heavy department running between grants and tax levies.

Departments in towns this size don't have deep budgets. A bowl of chili sold at a folding table does more here than it would in a bigger city — it buys gear, keeps trucks running, and reminds a town that the people who show up when the alarm rings are their neighbors first.
