HERRIN — City Hall wants someone else to pay for it, and who could blame them. Herrin will seek nearly $1 million in grant funding to replace an aging water main along West Monroe Street, according to the Southern Illinoisan.
This is the unglamorous side of running a coal town whose infrastructure is older than most of the people paying the water bill. Grant money for pipe replacement doesn't make headlines the way a ribbon-cutting does, but a busted main in January does — usually on the front page, usually with somebody's basement in the photo.
No timeline for the grant application or the project itself was included in the available reporting. Residents along West Monroe Street will want to keep an eye on the council's next moves.
