HERRIN, Ill. — The Herrin High School boys' cross country team didn't just win the 2025 River-to-River Conference Ohio Division title last year — it ran away with it, the Southern Illinoisan reported.
With returning runners and a full year of training behind them, the Tigers are chasing their fourth consecutive league championship this fall. That kind of streak doesn't happen by accident in a conference full of teams with their own ambitions.
Carterville, too, enters the season looking to defend league hardware, part of a fall sports slate across Williamson County where cross country programs have quietly built some of the steadiest winning traditions in the area — long seasons of early mornings and long miles that don't get the Friday-night crowds but earn the respect of anybody who's tried to run six kilometers in August heat.
The Ohio Division race will again run through Herrin, and the rest of the conference knows it. Whether the Tigers make it four straight comes down to the same thing it always does out here: who's still finishing strong when the course gets hard.
