CARTERVILLE, Ill. — Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge is turning 75, and it's marking the milestone by throwing the gates open, according to thesouthern.com and the Southern Illinoisan.
The refuge is hosting free fishing days over Father's Day weekend, waiving the usual permit requirements so families can cast a line without paying in.
Seventy-five years is a long run for any piece of ground in this county, and the refuge has earned its keep as one of the places families come back to year after year. A free weekend of fishing is a fitting way to mark the occasion.
