MARION, Ill. — Williamson County's equalization multiplier — the obscure but consequential figure that adjusts local assessments to match state standards — has fallen sharply from last year, the Southern Illinoisan reports.
Few county residents ever see the multiplier by name, but it works its way into every property tax bill in the county. A steep drop can mean assessed values were running high relative to actual sale prices, and it ripples through what homeowners, farmers, and businesses ultimately owe.
The shift is the kind of bureaucratic detail that rarely gets a headline until the bill arrives in the mailbox. Taxpayers watching their assessments this year would do well to ask their township assessor how the new multiplier lands on their particular parcel.
