MARION — Williamson County Supervisor of Assessments Josh Smith is trying to set the record straight, the Southern Illinoisan reports, as property owners across the county push back on rising assessments and question how his office handles their appeals.
Assessments touch everybody who owns a house or a storefront here, and in a county where a lot of people are watching every dollar, a jump in a tax bill lands hard. Smith's defense of his office's work comes as those complaints have piled up.
This is the kind of story that deserves watching, not because assessors are villains by default, but because the appeals process is where ordinary homeowners find out whether county government actually listens when they show up. This paper will keep an eye on how those appeals play out.
