There are craters near the moon's south pole that have not seen sunlight in billions of years. Temperatures inside them drop cold enough to trap ice. China's Chang'e-7 mission is being built to go looking for it, according to reporting by Al Jazeera, in a bid to answer one of lunar science's more consequential open questions: how much water is actually locked in the moon's shadowed craters, and can it be reached?
The stakes go beyond geology. Water ice on the moon could, in principle, be split into hydrogen and oxygen — rocket fuel and breathable air — making it a foundational resource for any sustained human presence there. That is why multiple nations and private ventures, not just China, have treated permanently shadowed lunar craters as a prize worth mapping in detail.
Al Jazeera's report frames Chang'e-7 as part of China's broader lunar ambitions, though the report does not detail a specific launch date, spacecraft instrumentation, or independent verification of ice deposits — those remain open questions the mission itself is designed to answer, not settle in advance. Previous missions, including NASA's LCROSS impactor in 2009, found evidence of water ice at the lunar south pole, but the extent, concentration and accessibility of that ice remain genuinely unresolved in the scientific literature.
That is the honest state of play: promising indirect evidence, and a new mission designed to go find out for certain. Nothing here has been confirmed by Chang'e-7 itself yet, because it has not returned data — this is a mission on its way to test a hypothesis, not a discovery already in hand.
