CARTERVILLE — Massac County beat Carterville/Herrin in a penalty-kick shootout Tuesday night, the Southern Illinoisan reported, in a match that carried the weight of a rivalry showdown despite its nonconference billing.
The two programs are familiar River-to-River Conference opponents, and that history showed. Neither side let up through regulation, and the game came down to kicks from the spot before Massac County came out on top.
For Carterville/Herrin, it's the kind of hard-fought loss that shouldn't sting the standings much given the nonconference label, but it's the type of test that tends to pay off once conference play tightens up later in the season.
